How to Print a Word Search Without Printing the Answers

To print a word search from Word Puzzle World, finish the puzzle, check its answer key, and download the PDF. The generator PDF contains the puzzle on page one and the matching answer key on page two. Open the file, choose the paper size loaded in your printer, and print page one for players. Print page two separately when you need a checking copy.

This guide explains how to print a word search with readable letters, a complete word bank, and the right solution. If you have not made your puzzle yet, open the Word Search Generator, enter your words, and return here when the preview is ready.

Browser printing opens your browser's print controls. Downloading a PDF creates a file you can reopen without recreating the puzzle. Word export creates a DOCX document with editable tables, which is useful when you want to add lesson notes or change the surrounding layout.

For a straightforward handout, the PDF route makes the two pages easy to identify. Keep that complete file as your master, even when you print only the puzzle.

Set Up One Sample Before Making Many Copies

Try a short outdoor vocabulary puzzle titled Along the Trail. Enter these twelve words, one per line:

RIVER, FOREST, STREAM, VALLEY, MEADOW, TRAIL, BRIDGE, PEBBLE, LEAF, CLOUD, FIELD, POND.

Start with a 12-by-12 grid, set Max words to 12, and choose the directions you want. Generate the puzzle and compare all twelve requested words with their paths in the answer key. A word appearing in the bank is not a substitute for checking its location. If a word is missing, enlarge the grid or shorten the list, then generate again before printing.

In Page design, choose US Letter if that is the paper in your printer. Select Portrait and try a margin of 12.7 mm, equivalent to half an inch. Keep the word list visible and use three columns. These are example settings, so change them when your printer, paper, or readers need something different.

Look at the longest word in the bank and the letters along every edge of the grid. Check that the title is readable and that no word looks crowded. Open the answer preview and confirm that its grid matches the puzzle you intend to distribute.

When learning how to print a word search, one checked sample is more useful than a stack of nearly correct copies. Print a single sheet first and read it at the distance someone would normally use a worksheet.

Along the Trail uses US Letter, Portrait, a 12.7 mm margin, and a three-column word bank. All twelve words are present in the checked puzzle.

How to Print a Word Search and Keep the Key Separate

After downloading the PDF, look through both pages. The first is the unmarked puzzle. The second shows the solution. The answer preview on the website helps you inspect the result; selecting that tab does not replace checking the pages in the print dialog.

For a group of 24, select page one and request 24 copies. Then print one copy of page two for yourself. Check the page-range field before each job. If you print both pages with double-sided printing enabled, the solution may appear on the back of each puzzle.

The browser Print route also needs this check. Read the preview's page thumbnails and choose the pages you actually want. Browser settings can vary, so use the visible output rather than assuming a particular tab prints by itself.

Before handing out the sheets, compare one printed puzzle with its key. Matching titles help you organize files, but matching letters confirm you have the correct pair.

These are the two pages from one exported PDF. Print page 1 for players and page 2 separately for the answer key.

Match the Paper, Then Decide Whether to Scale

A4 and US Letter are different page sizes. Choose the intended size in the generator and select the same size in the print dialog. If you change the generator's paper settings after downloading, download a fresh PDF to capture that layout.

When the page fits the printer's printable area, Actual size or 100% preserves its designed dimensions. A Fit option scales the page to the printable area; it can solve clipping, but it can also make the grid and word bank smaller. Option names depend on your PDF viewer and printer.

If an edge is cut off, first check paper size and orientation. Next, inspect margins. Try Fit if needed, then examine a test copy for legibility. Avoid shrinking the page repeatedly without checking the result.

Landscape can help a wide rectangular grid, but it leaves less vertical room for the title and word bank. Change orientation in the generator and review the complete layout before exporting again.

Small letters are sometimes a layout problem rather than a printer problem. A dense grid has more cells competing for the available page area. Fewer rows or columns can give each cell more room, provided the target words still fit. Reducing the word count may also make the worksheet easier to arrange.

The standard generator does not provide a fixed font-size selector. Enlarging the webpage on your screen is not a reliable way to set printed type size. If you need precise type adjustments, use the Word export, edit the table carefully, and check the layout again before printing.

Keep the Download and Its Solution Together

Regenerating can move words even when the vocabulary stays the same. Save the new puzzle with its new answer key. Do not combine yesterday's solution with today's layout because both files share the same title.

For reusable worksheets, give the downloaded file a recognizable name in your downloads folder, such as along-the-trail-version-1.pdf. Keep a complete master containing both pages. If you later edit grid letters in Word, check the matching solution too; changing a cell can affect more than one crossing word.

If your question is how to print a word search for several groups, finish one version first. Print identical copies for a shared activity, or save each regenerated version separately when groups need different layouts.

Printing Questions

How do I save a word search as a PDF?

Generate the puzzle, review it, and use the PDF download action. Open the saved file to confirm that both the puzzle and its answer key are present. Some browsers also offer a PDF destination in their print dialog, but the tool's download provides the generator's own export.

Can I print only the answer key?

Yes. In the generator PDF, select page two in your PDF viewer's print controls. Check its thumbnail before printing. For browser printing, use the page numbers shown in that print preview.

How do I print a word search without a word list?

Turn off Show word list on worksheet in Page design, wait for the preview to update, and export again. Explain the activity clearly to players: removing the list changes what they know about the answers they are looking for.

Why does my Word file print differently from the PDF?

Word is an editable document, so changes to fonts, table dimensions, margins, and surrounding text can affect pagination. Use the PDF when you want to retain the exported page layout. Use Word when editing is the purpose, then inspect its print preview.
