About This Worksheet
APPLE, PUMPKIN, and ACORN bring three different plant stories into a fall scene. LEAVES, MAPLE, FIELD, and HARVEST connect visible seasonal change with crops and trees. Use this set with a local photograph, produce display, or short autumn reading.
An ACORN and a PUMPKIN both come from plants, but they are associated with different kinds of growth. CIDER connects APPLE to a harvested product that students may recognize.

Activity 1
Observation or harvest?

After the Puzzle
For the crop journey, ask students to place FIELD, HARVEST, BASKET, and an appropriate crop in a meaningful order. CIDER would require processing fruit, so it should not appear before the apples in a simple sequence. If a student describes falling LEAVES as harvesting, invite them to distinguish the natural change from a person gathering a crop. Sensory writing can include color, texture, or temperature, but do not insist every autumn is cold or every MAPLE has bright leaves. Look for one clear, specific description rather than a sentence containing all twelve terms.
Set out an APPLE, ACORN, and photograph of a PUMPKIN or FIELD. Students can place each in a seasonal observation or harvest story and explain what a person might collect. MAPLE and LEAVES can describe a tree, while CIDER is made after fruit is gathered; it does not grow directly in the field. A SCARECROW is an object used by people rather than a plant. Ask students to put BASKET in the step where it belongs and to describe CRISP as a feeling or quality of air. Their story can reflect a local place or a fictional one.
Differentiate the Activity
Support: Sort APPLE and PUMPKIN as crops and ACORN and LEAVES as tree-related clues using pictures.
Challenge: Compare a MAPLE tree with a FIELD crop, then use HARVEST, BASKET, and CIDER in a seasonal description.
Extension Ideas
