After the Puzzle
For an animal fact check, ask whether a claim comes from a real-world observation or a costume story. A picture of a BAT near the MOON does not show that bats live on the moon. If students choose a SPIDER, have them describe a visible feature. A good description lets another student identify the pictured item while remaining respectful of different celebrations and preferences. In the category sort, accept a word in more than one group when the student explains the context, as PUMPKIN may be food, plant vocabulary, or decoration.
Offer three images: a real SPIDER, a paper BAT decoration, and a PUMPKIN on a table. Students write one sentence describing what is visible in each, then choose whether a statement is a fact about an animal or an invented PARTY story. A COSTUME or MASK changes how a person looks but does not change what a real spider or bat is. ORANGE and GLOW add color and light to the description. Students who do not celebrate the holiday can still describe colors, animals, and classroom objects.
