Activity 1

Classify the vocabulary

Students sort terms into State, Property, Energy or Change, and Material Description. They discuss where HEAT fits and why it should be treated as energy transfer rather than a substance.

Students choose four words and give a real-world example for each, such as ice melting, water as a liquid, air as a gas, or a mixture of sand and salt.

Activity 3

Property reasoning

Provide two imaginary objects with different masses and volumes. Without requiring difficult computation, ask students to predict which might be denser and explain what additional information they would need.

After the Puzzle

Ask for an example that can be checked rather than a chain that links every term. Ice MELTing into liquid water is a change of state; it does not mean the matter has vanished. A MIXTURE contains substances together without necessarily forming a new substance. If a student says a larger object must be denser, compare objects of different materials to challenge the claim, or use a simple mass-and-volume model. For younger learners, a brief recognition of PLASMA is enough. A sound response uses one property or change precisely and identifies the evidence used to describe it.

Try a card sort with two questions: does this word name a kind of matter, a property, a process, or an energy-related observation? SOLID and LIQUID are states, MASS and VOLUME are properties, and MELT is a process. HEAT may drive a change, but not every example of MOTION involves melting. Students can explain why a MIXTURE belongs in a different category from a single material. DENSITY needs both mass and volume, so a statement based on size alone is incomplete. A glass of water and an ice cube make this concrete without requiring students to handle hot objects.
