About This Worksheet
This space-science puzzle combines natural objects, a path of motion, a scale word, and a human-made exploration tool. MARS, VENUS, and SATURN are named planets. MOON, STAR, COMET, and ASTEROID refer to other kinds of natural object. ORBIT is not an object at all: it is the path an object follows around another under gravity. ROCKET names technology used to launch or propel something. These differences make the list useful for a category activity after students have found the spellings.
A solar-system drawing can help students see relationships, but ordinary classroom diagrams are not drawn to scale. A MOON may orbit a PLANET; planets in our solar system orbit the Sun, which is a STAR. GALAXY is a much larger collection of stars and other matter; it is not another name for our solar system. SOLAR means relating to the Sun in this context. The word search introduces those connections without asking students to memorize planet distances or infer that objects are evenly spaced because a diagram puts them in a neat row.
Use a diagram or a short reading from the current unit alongside the puzzle. After the search, let students put a few labels on the diagram, draw connection arrows, and say what each arrow means. If they replace starter words with unit vocabulary, check the generated grid and answer key before printing. The page is a vocabulary bridge into astronomy, not a scale model, an observation log, or a claim that every term belongs in the same size category.

- PLANET
- A large natural body orbiting a star. MARS, VENUS, and SATURN are planets in our solar system.
- ORBIT
- The path an object follows as it moves around another object under gravity; it is not a solid track in space.
- COMET
- A small icy body that orbits the Sun and can show a coma or tail when it travels closer to the Sun.
- ASTEROID
- A smaller rocky or metallic body orbiting the Sun; many are found in the region between Mars and Jupiter.
- GALAXY
- An enormous system of stars, gas, dust, and other matter held together by gravity. Our solar system is within the Milky Way galaxy.

Activity 1
Space category sort
Students place MARS, VENUS, SATURN, PLANET, MOON, STAR, COMET, and ASTEROID with natural objects or object types. ORBIT goes with motion, ROCKET with exploration technology, and GALAXY with a much larger system. SOLAR describes a relationship to the Sun rather than a separate object. Ask students to justify one term that was initially hard to place; the goal is a meaningful sort, not an arbitrary equal number in each box.
Activity 2
Connection map
Start with four arrows: MOON to PLANET, PLANET to ORBIT, STAR to GALAXY, and ROCKET to exploration. Students label each arrow with a phrase such as 'can orbit' or 'is part of' and explain why the direction matters. A planet is not a moon simply because both move through space. They may add the Sun as a written example of STAR, even though SUN is not one of the puzzle words.
Activity 3
Scale and question card
Students arrange MOON, PLANET, solar system, and GALAXY from smaller object or system to larger context, making clear that the cards are about levels of organization rather than exact measured sizes. Then they choose MARS, VENUS, or SATURN and write one question they could investigate with a reliable source. A question is preferable to an invented fact when the class has not studied that planet in detail.
After the Puzzle
Return to the diagram and ask what the drawn lines and distances actually show. ORBIT is a path of motion, not a metal ring; a neat picture does not mean the planets are evenly spaced. Have students identify ROCKET as a tool people build and distinguish it from the naturally occurring bodies nearby. A student may know a spacecraft that is not itself a rocket; use that example to avoid calling every exploration vehicle by the same name.
Ask pairs to explain how a STAR, a PLANET, and a MOON relate without calling them interchangeable. If a student says GALAXY means the solar system, invite them to place our solar system inside the Milky Way in a nested sketch. For COMET and ASTEROID, accept an age-appropriate distinction supported by the classroom source. The answer key confirms where words were hidden; the labeled sketch and explanation show whether students understand the terms.
Differentiate the Activity
For support, keep eight terms and provide a labeled solar-system picture. Students can place PLANET, MOON, STAR, ORBIT, ROCKET, and a few named planets before trying the more abstract GALAXY. Short oral explanations and movable cards reduce the drawing and writing load. Keep the picture's not-to-scale limitation visible.
For challenge, add GRAVITY, ROTATION, REVOLUTION, SATELLITE, NEBULA, or DWARF PLANET only when the class is ready to explain the added concepts. Ask students to distinguish a body's spin from its motion around another body and to say which arrow on their diagram represents each. More terms should deepen the relationship map, not merely make the grid harder.
Extension Ideas
Students make a one-object research card with the object's type, a checked location or relationship, one verified feature, and one scientific question. A card about SATURN might ask about its rings; a card about a comet might ask what changes as it approaches the Sun. Provide a classroom source and invite students to mark what the source does not answer. Cards can be exchanged so peers verify that each fact belongs to the chosen object rather than to space in general.
Quick Assessment
Ask students to define ORBIT in a sentence or labeled arrow, identify MARS, VENUS, and SATURN as planets, distinguish a comet from an asteroid at the level taught, and explain why ROCKET belongs in a different category. A correct answer can be brief, but it should not rely on the positions of letters in the grid. If students confuse GALAXY with solar system, revisit the nested sketch before adding more vocabulary.
